The Soundtrack of My Heritage

Vilia Mauser's project for My Family Story 2023. ANU- Museum of the Jewish People

Vilia Mauser

I chose to explore music for my Shorashim project because it connects me to my family and my Jewish heritage in a special way.
My dad is a big music fan, and he exposed me to a variety of genres when I was growing up. From classical music to thrash metal, we listened to it all. Some of my favorite memories are singing along to the radio with him on the way to school. Music has always been a way for us to bond and share experiences together.

But music is more than just a bonding activity for my family. It's also an important part of our Jewish heritage. The role of music in Judaism goes back centuries. Music has been used to express joy and sorrow, to praise God, and to connect with the divine.

Through my Shorashim project, I learned more about my family's history and the role that music has played in our lives. When I listen to the same songs that my grandparents and great-grandparents enjoyed, and especially, when I listen to their voices, I feel a connection to them and to my past. I feel like I'm part of something bigger than myself.
