I live in Berlin

Immanuel Eyngorn's project for My Family Story 2023. ANU- Museum of the Jewish People

Immanuel Eyngorn

I wrote a book telling the story of my family and the story of the last name "Eyngorn". The book is written in German and Yiddish and illustrated by teenagers from Austria, Germany, Lithuania, Poland and Israel at the summer camp of the Artek Youth Educational Center.

My source of inspiration is the main theme of the camp's activities - Kultur Lige. Getting to know the works of Kultur Lige painters gave Art Studio participants the inspiration to illustrate my story. A few years ago my mother the Beit Hatfutsut museum and discovered the story of a man named Immanuel Eyngorn from Frankfurt. I assumed that there might be a chance that I was a descendant of that Frankfurt resident and decided to write the story and share it with the youth in the camp. The story led me to reflect on the fate of the Jews in the diaspora and the meaning of Israel for me and for the Jewish people. I was born in Berlin and I speak German, my roots are from Ukraine and I speak Russian. My grandmother, relatives and friends live in Israel and I am learning Hebrew. I feel that I have a home and a big family in the Land of Israel even though I live in Berlin.
