Jewopoly: My Babushka's Journey

Sydney Freeman's "Jewopoly: My Babushka's Journey" My Family Story Project

Sydney Friedman

I created a Jewopoly Monopoly to represent the journey of my Babushka’s (Grandma) life from the Soviet Union to America. In 1977, my grandparents left the Soviet Union (Lithuania) as refugees and immigrated to America. In the Soviet Union, my Babushka was a Russian language teacher, but she had to find a different job in the United States. One day, she looked through a newspaper to see which jobs were in demand. Her choices were nursing or IT, so she went to nursing school. I think if my project were to be displayed in the ANU Museum, it would help people understand the importance of following your beliefs in a rough time. I chose to focus on my Babushka’s journey because she provided a Jewish education for her children and gave her family a better life than what she had in the Soviet Union.
