Remember and care

Sara Shamosh Shabot's project for My Family Story 2024. ANU-Museum of the Jewish People

Sara Shamosh Shabot

This project is a small tribute to pay homage to my ancestors who have worked to contribute to the well-being of the wonderful Jewish Community of Mexico. I made a model of one of the most representative synagogues, the Maguen David Community. At first glance, it's just a building, but upon opening one of its columns, there is a whole story of hard work and sacrifice, that is not immediately apparent, because there´s more to see and understand beyond the outside surface. That's why the names of my grandparents are there, as this also represents me, my roots, what I am, and what lies behind me. They are the foundations that support everything I am. The Temple remains under construction as a symbol of my responsibility and of the generations that come after me, to continue their legacy and create a better world. This represents growth, and responsibility, and highlights the importance of transmitting to future generations the traditions and values that will define the future.
