The Strenth of Saba Shimshon

Yahli's "The Strenth of Saba Shimshon" My Family Story Project

Yahli Shapiro

There is a lot of beautiful and interesting story’s in my family but I decided to use ‎this one because My great grandfather Sabba Shimshon is someone I look up to ‎and love very much.‎ I was very inspired with my Great Grandfather’s achievements as a sportsman and ‎bodybuilder, especially in the early years of the state of Israel when Fitness wasn’t ‎popular like it is today.‎ The materials we used: We first used carving foam and put it all around a wooden ‎pole once it dried me and my dad carved it into the basic shape of an arm, ‎afterwards we put clay all over the arm and moulded it into the perfect arm and ‎then we painted it. We then added the dumbbells made from polystyrene with a ‎whole in the middle which perfectly fitted into the wooden pole the arm was ‎holding, my dad and I then cut up and stacked wood to make the arm look like it ‎was on a first-place podium, lastly, we added pictures and the story all around.‎ This project represents my family because it represents 74 years of Shimshon’s ‎gym he has been actively training athletes and promoting a healthy lifestyle ‎especially helping Jews in the 50s gain back their strength. Through the gym my ‎great grandfather supported his family. It also represents my Sabba’s close ‎connection to Judaism Shimshon has used his Tefillin everyday since he was 13 ‎years old on his Bar-mitzvah ‎(80 years) he has always had a strong connection with Judaism his Grandfather ‎Aharon was Rabbai and Sofer Stam.‎ In my opinion this project symbolizes the Jewish spirit to overcome adversities and ‎anti-Semitism, especially through the early years of the establishment of the state of ‎Israel and coming out of it strong in spirit and strong in body.‎ I think my project should be displayed in the Beit Hatfutsot Museum because my ‎Great Grandfather Shimshon is someone anyone can look up too, he started from ‎nothing being as poor as poor can be never finding a place he belonged until he ‎came to Israel, there he began to really become himself and worked out more than ‎ever he met the love of his life and opened a gym In Holon something young ‎Shimshon couldn’t even dream about. He helped the Jewish people of Holon gain ‎back their strength and he united Israel and Jews through the love of sport and ‎body building. His story tells me to never give up on your dreams, work hard and ‎be a proud strong Jew. I would love the story of my beloved Sabba to be shared ‎with the world, I admire the fact that he dedicated his life to fitness, body building ‎and Judaism to this very day, Sabba Shimshon still owns and works in his gym ‎with his son Uri loving every moment of life.‎
