The Unbelievable Story of Shulam Pasternak, his Two Wives and One Horse

Petel Pasternak's project for My Family Story 2022. ANU- Museum of the Jewish People

Petel Pasternak

In this piece, Petel combines a model and comics to illustrate
an event related to her family that took place in 1944 in the Auschwitz extermination camp. In the model, a group of Jewish women are standing in line for a bowl of soup, when suddenly the food cart horse bites a woman named Leah. The women are afraid to approach her to help, except for Dvora who bandages her wounds and saves her life. On the walls of the model, Petel drew comics that have the curly graphic borders of old pictures.

The comics depict Deborah's experiences after the war: her marriage to Shulem Pasternak and especially her incredible encounter with Leah in Israel. The immortalized story connected Petel with her family's history, the Jewish people, and the important value of saving a Jewish soul.
